Job Purpose
The Student Welfare and Safeguarding Officer will be responsible for providing a high quality service to students facing welfare and safeguarding issues and acts as the first point of contact for staff. He/She will manage safeguarding referrals, establish effective relationships with stakeholders, produce risk assessments, and provide regular data on safeguarding incidents. He/She will also ensure the college provides a safe and supportive environment for all students.
Job Description
- Act as a first point of contact providing confidential information and advice service for all students on safeguarding-related concerns including child protection disclosures.
- Provide an advisory service for staff in dealing with student safeguarding concerns.
- Monitor and manage safeguarding referrals ensuring interventions are timely and responsive, in line with child protection legislation and statutory guidance.
- Manage the safeguarding duty phone, responding to calls when needed.
- Ensure all protection records on student safeguarding information are accurately recorded and stored in line with statutory guidance.
- Establish, maintain, and develop effective relationships which engage students, especially those identified as being at risk of leaving their course or failing to achieve, to remove potential barriers, so that assistance and support can be offered within a professional relationship on an ongoing basis if appropriate.
- To act as the first point of contact for any safeguarding, or student protection concerns, providing timely, relevant support and advice in order to safeguard the student
- Ensure effective sign-posting of services and referrals by developing good working relationships with other stakeholders including parents/carers, project staff, and professionals from external specialist voluntary, statutory, and community agencies.
- Produce risk assessments and support plans to safeguard students and share as appropriate with other individuals with consent.
- Ensure that data protection and client confidentiality requirements are met, including the confidential storage of client records, obtaining client permission before sharing information, assessing risk, and where appropriate breaking confidentiality in order to ensure the health and safety of individuals.
- To establish and maintain a working relationship with relevant statutory, voluntary, and community agencies.
- To provide, collate and monitor regular, accurate, and timely data on safeguarding and child protection incidents and outcomes.
- To establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with students, parents/carers, colleagues, and others as part of duties.
- To support the development and monitoring of student awareness of safeguarding, and child and adult protection.
- To risk assess the safeguarding situation presented to ensure that the student is safeguarded and supported adequately and appropriately.
- To undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required commensurate with the grade of the post, at the initial place of work or any other college site.
Competencies Required
- Recent experience working in a social care, community, youth work, advice, guidance, or education role with young people
- Further education and experience may be preferred.
- Outstanding research and analytical skills.
- Strong I.T. knowledge and experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Have a good, sound, working knowledge of current safeguarding, child and adult protection legislation, statutory and other related guidance
